Next to the bed, just two things

Just two things next to the bed. I keep my gaze simple before going to sleep.

two things next to the bed

This is a daily space routine that lightens everyday life. Use “Next to the bed, just two things” to build a more wellness-friendly home or desk.

The bedside table is the boundary where the end and beginning of the day overlap. The more things you have here, the more the organizing list will run through your head even when you're lying down. The 'just two things' proposed by POKIT are not minimalism, but practical rules to reduce the burden on the brain before sleep.

There are two standards: ‘what you need at night’ and ‘what you need in the morning’. Anything more than that is sent out of the bedroom. A charger, glasses, a glass of water, and an alarm clock—these are the only two things I need for today.

The bedroom is a space for sleeping. If your table becomes a small desk or a charging station, your work mode won't turn off even if you lie down. Two rules are the simplest way to enforce that boundary:

Reachable radius at night

Throughout the day, observe what the last thing you reach for before going to sleep is. Mostly it's one of the following: a book, phone, water, or glasses. If you have those four things on the table at the same time, you'll have a 'things to sort out' list even when you're lying down.

One for the night is usually water, glasses, or a small notebook. We recommend leaving your phone on a charging stand outside the bedroom. The distance you are away from your screen changes the quality of your sleep. If there is no phone on the table, replace the alarm with a clock or an alarm in another room.

a spot for breakfast

For breakfast, choose between glasses, water, or a book to read today. I only leave ‘what I need as soon as I wake up tomorrow morning’. Move clothes, cosmetics, and documents out of the bedroom to the dressing table or toward the front door.

If you have a table drawer, leave it empty or just put in a box of tissues. When a drawer becomes a space to hide things, even if it looks neat on the outside, the organization in your head never ends.

Where do you go beyond two?

Gather items off the table on a shelf outside the bedroom door or in a room in the living room. If you set up a 'storage box outside the bedroom', you won't have to worry about it every day. Cleaning up just once on the weekend will make your weeknights lighter.

This rule is not a hard restriction. It's okay to have more stuff when you're traveling or having a sick day. However, if you set your daily default status to 'two things', you will have a reference point to return to when your room becomes cluttered.

If you have a table lamp, adjust the light so that it does not illuminate the bed. The boundary between sleeping space and lighting is also similar to the ‘two’ rule.

Next to the bed is the stage where the day ends. Just two things: When you close your eyes, there's nothing to organize. Tonight, take a look at the table.

The simpler the place you focus your gaze before going to sleep, the quieter your mind will be.
