A shorter list makes the next step clearer

Weekly planning
If a midday message check fits your work, use it to make decisions, then leave the inbox rather than hovering inside it.
Lunch deserves its own time. If you need to check messages around midday, put that check after the meal rather than letting it fill the break.
Give the inbox a bounded window, perhaps fifteen minutes. Look for anything that needs attention before the afternoon continues. Follow the expectations of your role and team, including any urgent channels you need to monitor.
Reply when the action is genuinely brief. For something larger, record the next step, deadline, and person waiting in your normal task system. Archive what no longer needs action, but don't hide unfinished commitments just to reach zero.
When the check ends, choose the next piece of work and close or move away from the inbox. Keep essential alerts available. If more time is needed, schedule it honestly rather than promising every message will fit the same short window.
The point is a clearer boundary between checking and working. An inbox with messages left in it can still be under control when you know which ones need action and when you'll return.
