Hydration check at 3 p.m.: Half of daze is thirst

Introducing a 3-minute check to restore energy with water and a short rest before adding coffee during the 3pm slump. Half of daze can be thirst, and adding environmental clues, such as the location of a glass on your desk, makes repetition easier.

This is a daily wellness routine you can use right away. Try “Hydration check at 3 p.m.: Half of daze is thirst.” to gently reset your body’s rhythm.

Feeling dazed around 3 p.m. is not only caused by lack of sleep. Even mild dehydration can reduce your concentration and mood. Before drinking another cup of coffee, we recommend doing a 3-minute hydration check. Caffeine may cause you to wake up briefly, but it can actually prolong fatigue in a dehydrated body. Before ‘adding coffee’ becomes a habit, a glass of water becomes a simpler first choice. A glass of water may be small, but it's one of the simplest levers to get your afternoon rhythm back on track. The habit of checking off small afternoon dazes with a glass of water is easier to maintain than the coffee habit.

3 minute check

Thirst, headache, tired eyes—if you have any of these, drink 250 ml of water first. Lukewarm water is the easiest. Coffee later, just one cup if you need it. It is easier to drink little by little rather than drinking a lot at once. If you still feel dazed 10 minutes after drinking water, then try taking a short break or light stretching.

Attaching anchors

Put a 3-minute repeat schedule at 3:00 PM on your calendar. Instead of an alarm, the position of your desk glass, or eye contact with a colleague to 'drink water'—environmental cues create repetition. Refilling your glass right after lunch will save you the effort of searching in the afternoon. The same glass and the same seat become the ‘3 PM’ signal.

Pair with a 5 minute break

This week only, I observe water and a 5-minute break at 3 p.m. Feel the difference in how many cups of coffee you have and how focused you are in the afternoon. Rather than aiming for perfect hydration, the goal is to make ‘water first when you feel dazed’ become a habit. Even if there is no difference after a week, the habit of reminding your body of water first will remain. It's a small habit, but it can change your mood for the whole afternoon.
