Morning Brief

3 Minutes of Breathing: Breathing to Relax Afternoon

We guide you through the 4-7-8 breathing and belly breathing sequence that you can do for just 3 minutes at your desk without a meditation app. Even between meetings, taking short breaths can calm the sympathetic nervous system, relieve afternoon tension, and make it easier to get back to work.

relax

This is a practical daily routine. Use “3 Minutes of Breathing: Breathing to Relax Afternoon” as a small habit you can repeat.

‘20 minutes of meditation’ is a burden, but ‘3 minutes of breathing’ is possible even between meetings. Breathing is one of the quickest levers to calm the sympathetic nervous system.

You can just turn on the timer for 3 minutes without any app, music or guidance. Start by sitting on a chair, lowering your shoulders, and pressing the soles of your feet into the floor.

It doesn’t have to be the perfect meditation posture. All you have to do is keep your promise to ‘focus on your breathing for just 3 minutes’.

It is a tool that can be used at any time. You can do this without having to get up from your seat, even in the conference room.

4-7-8 one cycle

Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat only three cycles.

Lower your shoulders and close your eyes or look at the sky. Rather than obsessing over numbers, ‘slow’ is the standard.

If you feel dizzy, reduce to 4-4-6. When it comes to breathing, comfort comes first.

belly breathing

Place one hand on your stomach. I only feel my stomach expanding when I inhale and sinking when I exhale. 1 minute.

Make sure your stomach moves, not your chest. This is especially helpful for bodies that sit all day.

If you rotate your shoulders once after belly breathing, the tension in your neck will also be relieved.

When to use it

Before sending an email, before a difficult phone call, or when I feel low on energy at 3pm.

Just one minute before a meeting can make a difference in your voice and focus.

3-minute timer—when it's over, get back to work. Not thinking, ‘Should I do more?’ creates a habit.

small repetition

Even just once a day will create a pattern. It's easier if you stick it to the same time—such as a 3 p.m. alarm.

If you promise to take a ‘3-minute breath’ with your colleagues, you will create a culture where you can take a break without being embarrassed.

Now sit down in a chair and turn on the timer for 3 minutes. It may help you relax a little in the afternoon.

Three minutes of breathing instead of a long meditation—small breaths can change the pace of your day.

Breathing requires no tools. A timer and a chair are enough.

Before a meeting, before a call, or in the afternoon slump—you can use the same three minutes at other times as well.

3 minutes of breathing is the smallest reset you can start anywhere, even without a meditation app.
