STAIRS

Try the stairs instead of the escalator

On your commute, step out of the escalator line and use the stairs beside it for a short wake-up move.

On the commute, the escalator is the path your body knows. Even with a line, your feet go there first. You fix the bag, open the phone, and ride up one step at a time. The trip ends, but your body is still half asleep.

Today is not “I am working out.” It is “I will try one change.” If stairs sit beside the escalator, move your feet that way. Keep it separate from getting off one stop early to walk, and from an easy jog after you alight. Here you only use stairs that are already in the station.

Why the stairs

Even for the same floor, your feet and knees move on their own. A short climb raises the breath a little and still leads to the next platform or exit. You do not need a new workout block. Changing direction on a route you already take is enough.

This is not a forever ban on escalators. Busy days, heavy bags, or sore knees can stay on the ride. Switch only on days you decide “stairs today.”

How to try it

1. Pick one spot on your usual line where stairs and an escalator sit side by side. A morning exit, or one evening transfer, works well.

2. Even if a line forms, do not default to the escalator. Look once for the stairs beside it.

3. Hold the rail and go up or down slowly. Do not run. If the bag swings, press the strap with one hand and keep a steady rhythm.

4. The first time, one stretch is enough. Do not chase the next level. When you arrive, take ten seconds to settle your breath, then you can open the phone again.

What not to do

Do not fill every level with stairs. Skip days with bags in both hands or slippery shoes. Do not cut across people walking the other way. Do not score it with a heart-rate app.

In one line

Stairs once instead of the escalator. Choose again tomorrow.
