PACK
Before a weekend backpacking trip, do not let gear pile up for days. Close the list only the night before so you leave light.

When a weekend hike is coming, gear starts stacking beside the desk from Wednesday. A spare outfit, snack bags, an extra battery. Packing early feels calm, but the house turns into a tiny campsite and this week’s work gets blurry. Close the backpack only the night before you leave.
If you gather gear over several days, “maybe useful” items keep arriving. Narrowing it to one night cuts choices down to what you will use at night and what you will load in the morning. During the week, check only the calendar and weather. Bring packing into a single day.
Skip the perfect kit list. Write only what this route truly needs. Sleep, water, light, rain shell, a small first-aid set: the pieces that hurt if missing. Separate shopping for brands or new gear from packing time. The night before is for putting things in, not for choosing.
Check weather and the schedule once.
Anything not on the list goes back to its place, not onto the floor.
After packing, lift the bag. Remove or shift inward anything that digs into your shoulders.
Leave the backpack by the door or bag spot so morning is just putting on shoes.
When the weekend ends, do not leave the pack in a corner. Empty it that evening. Take out wet items and trash first, then gather only what you will use next. Clearing next week’s space makes this week light again.
The thrill of backpacking is closer to the day you walk out than to the days you pile gear. Make only the night before packing night, and weekdays stay less mixed with the weekend.
