Basic principles of protecting the skin barrier during dry season

We summarize the basics of protecting your skin during the dry season with the three principles of cleansing, moisturizing, and humidity. The habit of moisturizing frequently and less irritating the barrier than exfoliation is the key to winter skin, and repetition is more important than adding products.

Importance of Skin Care

This is a practical daily routine. Use “Basic principles of protecting the skin barrier during dry season” as a small habit you can repeat.

Winter skin suffers from both ‘lack of moisture’ and ‘damaged barrier’. When indoor heating, cold wind, and low humidity act simultaneously, the skin becomes tight and flaky. Frequent exfoliation can weaken the barrier even if it looks temporarily smooth.

The basics that dermatology emphasizes are gentle facial cleansing, immediate moisturizing, and indoor humidity management. Winter skin care is based on the principle of ‘less irritation, more frequent moisturizing’ rather than adding additional products.

Rather than expensive serums, three daily habits protect the barrier.

Wash your face – briefly and gently

Lukewarm water, low-foaming cleanser, briefly (less than 30 seconds). Hot water dissolves the skin's natural oils. Apply moisturizer within 3 minutes after washing your face. It is better for absorption when moisture remains.

Reduce exfoliation to once a week or less. In the winter, a gentle chemical exfoliation is better than a physical scrub. If you feel tightness after washing your face, it is a sign that the cleanser is too strong.

Moisturizing — Layers and Timing

‘Richer at night, lighter during the day’ is more practical than the ingredient name. Add a layer of cream or oil at night, and a light lotion during the day.

Do not forget areas that are prone to dryness, such as arms, calves, and the backs of hands. If you only apply it to your face and leave your arms unattended, the overall dryness will continue. Moisturizing isn't just for the face.

Humidity and lifestyle habits

Aim for indoor humidity of 40-60% and use small methods such as using a humidifier or drying with wet towels. If you don't have a humidifier, just hanging out wet towels will do the trick.

Dry air inside the mask, in front of the heater, or in the car dries out the skin even more. When going outdoors, apply moisturizer before going out, and apply another layer after returning home.

Habit over product

Before buying a new serum, follow your current moisturizing routine for two weeks. It is more effective to ‘moisturize within 3 minutes after washing your face’ than to change products.

If your skin is severely cracked or itchy, you need professional consultation. Although most winter dryness is alleviated with basic care, persistent symptoms may have other causes.

Lip balm and hand cream are also part of your moisturizing routine. Lips and hands dry out before your face, so just keeping a little hand cream in your bag can make a difference.

Winter skin care is not a complicated routine, but rather a repetition of three things: washing, moisturizing, and humidifying. Start by applying moisturizer within 3 minutes of showering today.
