Spaces
Keep the shoes you use most near the entrance, with a clear path for arriving and leaving.

Shoes tend to stop where they're taken off. If that spot is in the doorway, even a small collection can make coming home awkward.
Choose a rack, shelf, or mat near the entrance without narrowing the path or preventing the door from opening fully. Put the pairs you use most where they're easy to reach. Store occasional and out-of-season shoes elsewhere if you have suitable space.
Leave a place for damp shoes to dry according to their care instructions before returning them to enclosed storage. Keep wet umbrellas from dripping across a route people need to walk. A washable mat or tray can help if it stays flat and secure.
In a shared home, give everyone an arrangement they can actually use. A child, a guest, or someone who sits to put shoes on may need a different height or a little more space.
Check the setup after a week. If shoes still pile up somewhere else, that may be the more natural location to work with. The useful change is a clear doorway and an easy place to find the pair you want tomorrow.
