5-Minute Stretch Before Bed: Shoulders and Neck

We will guide you through a routine of relaxing your stiff neck and shoulders in front of the monitor all day for just 5 minutes and then going to bed. Instead of complex yoga, short stretches and breathing that get you moving your body instead of the screen will make the sleep transition easier.

Relax before going to sleep

This is a daily wellness routine you can use right away. Try “5-Minute Stretch Before Bed: Shoulders and Neck” to gently reset your body’s rhythm.

Instead of looking at screens before going to sleep, moving your body for just 5 minutes can help you transition to sleep. If you sit in front of a monitor all day, your neck, shoulders, and upper back will stiffen first. It's not complicated yoga, just short stretches that you can do next to your bed are enough. When you relax, your brain slows down a bit, and it works well with audio before going to sleep. When you unwind before bed, the transition away from the screen becomes a little more natural. 5 minutes of stretching before bed is a short ritual that allows you to slow down with the sensations of your body instead of turning off the screen.

5 minute sequence

Tilt your neck to the left and right for 30 seconds each. Draw circles with your shoulders 10 times. Place your hand on the door frame and gently open your chest. Do each movement slowly and within a pain-free range. It can be done next to the bed without a mat. Even if your posture is not perfect even after 5 minutes, it is enough to say, ‘I loosened my stiffness today.’

with breathing

Take a long exhale during each stretch. You can finish with one cycle of 4-7-8 breathing at the end. As your breathing becomes longer, your sympathetic nervous system calms down and the noise in your head decreases slightly. If you focus on your breath, the remaining worries of today will follow you a beat later.

separated from the screen

If 5 minutes a day is too much for you, just do it from Monday to Friday. You can take the weekend off. The goal is not perfect posture, but the feeling that ‘I relaxed my stiff shoulders today.’ Turn off the heat immediately after 5 minutes. As small repetitions accumulate, your body begins to learn that it is okay to rest now before falling asleep. If you slow down your body first, the distance it takes you to fall asleep will be shorter.

As small repetitions accumulate, your body begins to learn that it is okay to rest now before falling asleep. When you relax your neck and shoulders, your body often becomes more relaxed first when you lie down in bed.
