Neck and shoulder roll at desk

Every 90 minutes while sitting at your desk, slowly roll your neck and shoulders for 2 minutes. Desk routine to relieve tension in the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles.

The importance of stretching

This is a daily wellness routine you can use right away. Try “Neck and shoulder roll at desk” to gently reset your body’s rhythm.

If you look at the monitor for a long time, your head moves forward, and the suboccipital muscle at the back of your neck and the trapezius muscle at the shoulder tighten together. Rapidly turning your neck puts strain on your discs, so two minutes of slowly increasing your range while sitting at your desk is safe. As a rule, leaning backwards should be avoided in front of a desk.

A turtle neck is made in one day. Even just 2 minutes every 90 minutes can make a noticeable difference in how you feel in the evening. No stretching app, just an alarm. You can do it right while sitting at your desk.

Neck roll is preventable, not curable. If the pain is already severe, do not overextend the range; a light tilt is sufficient. If your arms feel numb, stop stretching and check your posture.

Sit at your desk, pull your chin in and start

Sit on a chair, lower your shoulders, and slightly pull your chin to lengthen the back of your head toward the ceiling. In this state, tilt your head to the right for 5 seconds, to the left for 5 seconds, and then forward for 5 seconds. Leaning backwards should not be done in front of a desk.

Next, roll your shoulders back and forth 5 times. If you turn your neck while your sternocleidomastoid muscle is shortened, it may cause pain, so release your shoulders first. Adjusting your monitor height to eye level will make the next 90 minutes less difficult.

Don't draw the entire neck, just a half circle.

Just draw a semicircle with your head clockwise. Without straining your ear to touch your shoulder, pause at the point of pain for 3 seconds. The same goes in the opposite direction. At the end, when you place both hands behind you and open your chest, your upper trapezius muscles will also stretch.

If the pain extends down to your arm, stop stretching and check your posture. If your shoulders rise when you turn your head, reduce the range. The key is to move only your neck and lower your shoulders heavily toward the floor. Total 2 minutes, finish in a state of relaxation, not pain.

Check with monitor height

Even if there is no pain when you roll your neck, if the monitor is set too low, it will come back together after 90 minutes. Make sure the top of the screen is at eye level and your elbows are at 90 degrees. Neck stretching is an aid to correcting posture, not a replacement for posture. Set an alarm every 90 minutes so you never forget.

The desk becomes a posture that stabilizes the neck. Investing just 2 minutes out of 90 will make a difference to your evening routine. It's especially effective when you're sleepy after lunch or before an afternoon meeting. Set your phone alarm back 90 minutes now.

If you feel pain when turning your neck, it is better to reduce the range rather than turning it more. You can start every 90 minutes with just 2 minutes or an alarm. The desk becomes a posture that stabilizes the neck.
