Plans need transition time, too

How to Plan Your Day: Leave Breathing Room Between Tasks

If your daily plan often runs late, leave room for transitions, travel, and unexpected tasks instead of filling every open slot.

하루 계획 세우는 법, 일정 사이에 여백 남기기

When you plan a day, it’s tempting to fit every task into the open spaces on your calendar. But a schedule that moves straight from a meeting to focused work, or from lunch to another demanding task, can slip as soon as one thing takes longer than expected.

Start by choosing one or two things that truly need your attention today and estimate how long each will take. Then leave about ten minutes between tasks. Use that time to change rooms, put away your notes, or get a glass of water before you begin again.

Ten minutes won’t suit every day or every person. Leave more time when you have a commute or a schedule that changes often; use less when you can continue comfortably in the same place. Keep one slot open so you can move a lower-priority task to tomorrow if the day starts to run late.

A daily plan isn’t a test you pass by filling every blank. It’s a map that helps you make the next choice when the day changes. When you plan tomorrow, add a little breathing room between the tasks, too.
