The return matters more than the gap

Missed a Day? Restart Your Habit with the Next Small Step

Missing a day doesn’t erase your progress. Pick the smallest action you can take the next time your habit comes around.

습관을 하루 빼먹었다면, 다음 행동부터 다시 잇기

When you’ve kept a habit going for a few days and then miss one, it can feel as if the whole plan has fallen apart. An empty square on the calendar may bring up the familiar thought: “I’ve given up again.”

You don’t need a bigger promise to return; you need a place to begin again. If you missed a workout, choose when you’ll put on your shoes next. If you skipped reading, open the book and read one page. There’s no need to make up for the missed amount.

Look for one reason the habit slipped: not enough time, a forgotten cue, or a goal that was too large. Treat that as useful information, not a verdict. You might shrink the action or attach it to something already in your day.

A habit isn’t defined by a calendar with no gaps. It also grows through the ability to return after a pause. Choose the smallest action you can take today and let that be the next square.
