20 minutes on Saturday morning, a quick way to end the week

The day after the Friday shutdown, I do a 20-minute routine to organize the past week and open the next week without any reminders. Before planning for Sunday, clear the loop in your head first.

End of the week

This is a daily routine for shaping your week. Use “20 minutes on Saturday morning, a quick way to end the week” to realign the rhythm of everyday life.

Even if you close work on Friday evening, when you open your eyes on Saturday morning, Slack, email, and unfinished tasks often remain in your mind. Even though the weekend has started, your brain is still stuck on Friday afternoon.

If you set aside 20 minutes on Saturday morning, you can organize your ‘last week’ ahead of your weekly plans on Sunday night. It's not a retrospective, it's more of a closing. No numbers or scorecards, just write down what you remember and what you miss, one line at a time.

20 minutes before turning on notifications

On Saturday morning, before turning on my phone notifications, I open a notebook. Write down three things you finished last week, one thing you regret, and one thing you want to move to next week. It doesn't have to be in report format.

Open your calendar and check only the appointments already scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday. It doesn't add any new to-dos. If you just look at 'what's already planned for next week' rather than 'what should I do next week', my mind feels light throughout the weekend.

first look of the weekend

When the 20 minutes are up, close your notebook and decide that your first activity of the day will be something non-screen related. Going for a walk, hanging out the laundry, opening a window—it can be small. This is a boundary that prevents Saturday morning from becoming an ‘extension of work’.

Pair that with a screen-free Sunday morning, and it's easy for the entire weekend to devolve into no-input time. Close on Saturday, open on Sunday—dividing the roles lightens each routine.

This is not a perfect weekly review. It's enough for your mind to be a little blank after 20 minutes. This Saturday morning, before turning on notifications, just open one note.
