Rainy-day journeys

On the move
On a suitable day, turn part of the walk from your stop into a comfortable jog, with plenty of room to walk instead.

Starting a run can feel like a separate project. But on a day when you're wearing suitable shoes and carrying little, part of the route from your stop to home might offer a simpler beginning.
Choose a familiar, well-lit pavement with enough room for other people. Check the surface and weather. A crowded station exit, heavy bag, slippery shoes, or an awkward road crossing is a good reason to walk instead.
Walk until you feel ready, then try a short, easy jog. Keep the effort comfortable rather than chasing a pace or running the whole distance. You can alternate brief jogging stretches with walking, especially if you're new to running.
Slow down near crossings, driveways, and crowds. Wait properly for signals, keep aware of your surroundings, and don't run to beat a light. Return to walking before you arrive so you can finish unhurriedly.
Stop for pain, dizziness, chest discomfort, or unusual breathlessness. If you're unsure whether running is suitable for you, get advice before making it a routine.
One comfortable stretch is enough to explore the idea. Walking the entire way is also a valid choice. The journey doesn't have to become a workout every time you get off the bus.
