Rainy-day journeys

On the move
Keep a book within reach and use a comfortable part of the ride for a little reading, without a page-count target.
There's often a small gap between finding a seat and reaching the next stop. If you'd like to read more, keep a paperback or an e-reader ready for that moment.
Open to your bookmark and begin with a page. You can stop halfway through it when the announcement plays. A tiny starting point is useful precisely because it doesn't ask you to finish a chapter before getting off.
Read only when you're comfortably seated or safely positioned. In a crowded carriage, holding a rail and watching your surroundings comes first. Put the book away before boarding, exiting, or approaching stairs.
Some journeys will give you several pages; others won't give you any. There's no need to convert them into a book-per-month calculation. One enjoyable passage can be a good use of an ordinary ride.
